It’s Been Confirmed!
We now know the name,
Of the enemy we face,
An enemy we will fight,
Knowing we cannot win.
We try to take heart
In that we have each other,
At least, for the moment,
But knowing the day will come,
When it will slice
Through what we have,
And part us, not with sweet sorrow
But with a thousand tiny incisions,
To leave us bruised and bleeding
As it triumphs over what we had,
And I watch and see it steal from you
As you succumb to its demands.
I lose you slowly by degrees,
Though sometimes it seems
As though your eyes kiss me,
But your lips stay resolute.
And I squeeze your hand
But there is no response.
No flicker of recognition,
No smile of joy can be seen
Fleeting across your
Dear expressionless face.
I still love but you no longer can,
Because you inhabit a different orb
The home chosen I hope will be your refuge
And that you will know no fear.
You no longer recognize me
And I know the time is
Fast approaching
When I will have to make
That most terrible decision.
To hand you over to those
Who are trained to deal with
This newly acquired aggression.
Aggression that makes me fearful
Of being in the house alone with you.
We have come this far together,
But now you will leave my world,
And I cannot enter yours.
So all that is left for me to say is
Go In Peace, My Lovely,
Painful though it is to say,
You have my blessing to
Leave your awful world behind,
Go skywards to that place
Where all lost souls are found.
I can no longer bear to see you
Frightened and confused.
So my hope and blessing is,
That you will soon be taken,
Early Onset Alzheimer’s,
Leaves no room for a man to exist
But the wife is left to witness its total
Annihilation of a husband once so strong.

Hi, Moya. I lost my mum to it in 1983. She spent the last two weeks of her life in Tooting Bec asylum. Thank god things have changed since then, and all we need now is a cure.
So sorry to hear about your niece. Shall be thinking of both of you.
