Nice words for two different creatures. Different but always beautiful and graceful ... the words and the creatures.

In Bulgaria we have different names for both. A reindeer is a severen elen (северен елен) which translates literally as north deer and a roe deer is a srandak (сръндак) for which there is no literal translation. .

However, as our Dyado Koleda (Дядо Коледа) meaning Grandfather Christmas doesn't travel around on a sleigh, reindeer didn't feature in our Christmas celebrations until the beginning of the influx of western culture around thirty years ago. He is said to have been born in the third or fourth century and lived in the Byzantine province of Cappadocia, located in present-day Turkey. So a donkey or a camel would probably be a more suitable form of transport for him.

Your comments are just brilliant! :0) Am so impressed by your Bulgarian, too! I've tried learning languages with different alphabets and found it so hard! Bulgarian looks to me  like every letter is a lantern :0) Grandfather Christmas must be the original, being so ancient, will have to look that up. I love the idea of an elderly man, with a grumpy, put upon camel. The reindeer always seem to have an unrealistic can do, service culture attitude.
