With that he left and shuffled his way across the little hall. As soon as he had gone I picked up the pages of his book and began to read. After the first paragraph I decided I couldn’t make any sense of it at all. I tried a few pages further on but it became no clearer, there were hand drawn graphs and mystical symbols as well as whole chapters written by hand in Greek and what I presumed to be Sanskrit. There was mention of names such as Gilgamesh, Patanjali, Aristotle, Sephiroth, and Otz Chaiim but despite trying for several hours I was completely unable to discover any theme or coherence.
It was in the evening two weeks later when John again knocked on my door.
"Hello" he said, "I’ve come to say goodbye. Tomorrow morning at 5.30 I am going to the airport, the flat is all clean and empty and ready for someone else."
"Did you manage to get your passport and tickets alright?"
"Oh yes, everyone has been very helpful and I have everything I need."
"I will be happy to help you with your bags to the airport in the morning."
"Oh no I don’t need any help, I haven’t got any bags, just my umbrella and my towel. I can get the number 18 bus at the bottom of the street into the main bus station and then there is a coach to Heathrow airport that leaves at seven o’clock. I have to be at the airport two hours before the flight so I am going to take some sandwiches. If you ever visit Belize you must come and say hello."
