Shallow Waters

We paddle in the safety of shallow waters

afraid that if we stray too far

                                    we will drown

                                    in the deep unknown

waiting to pull us from under

                                     life's surface

and down there in the darkness

                                    (which is our own blindness)

we'll be forced to see

how little we have lived

                                    how far there is to go.
