MERCY’S SMILE
I woke flat broke and busted, I’d been drinking for a while,
In a town where they would steal your teeth if you’re dumb enough to smile.
The guys walk round in pairs,, they say, to save them from the girls.
On the whole it’s a crazy mixed up world.
I was bunking at the hostel and down to my last dime.
A woman said “why don’t you sit and spend a little time”.
We talked through the night and she set my spirit free.
I count myself as lucky for the time she gave to me.
Mercy’s smile says it soon will be ok,
The darkest of the night-time will swiftly turn to day.
Until that morning, there’s a place where you can stay.
When you’re feeling well she’ll see you on your way.
When she left I asked a guy just who she might be.
He said her name is Mercy and she gives her time for free.
She wants nothing in return, she’ll let you stay the night,
She’ll give you food and warmth and help you find the light.
Mercy’s smile says it soon will be ok,
The darkest of the night-time will swiftly turn to day.
Until that morning, there’s a place where you can stay.
When you’re feeling well she’ll see you on your way.
The greasy pole I once slid down is now a shady tree.
I feel that I am blessed by all the time she gave to me.
The fates are kind – I haven’t needed helping for a while.
I never will forget how Mercy smiled.
Mercy’s smile says it soon will be ok,
The darkest of the night-time will swiftly turn to day.
Until that morning, there’s a place where you can stay.
When you’re feeling well she’ll see you on your way.
