You told me we take something from every relationship
They all have their own reason
their own purpose
I dont know if you took anything from me for yourself
However,
what I took from you were courgettes and cactuses
I stole that off you
I must have seen them before
probably ate some at some point
seen them offered on plastic laminated menus all across South London
But,
you opened up the whole vegetable section for me
gave me a batch of dishes and choices to experiment and play with
opened up a culinary World to me!
We aint spoke for months
and the courgettes are out of stock
I hear they'll be back after a bad winter
We hope
Til then there's other vegetables to try
You told me we didnt want a relationship
I didn't care
First trains used to wake me after uncomfortable sleeps
then I'd see cactuses on a window sil
Always wanted my own plant after watching Leon take such pride in watering his
I aint seen those orange summer sunsets out above that window sil since the last time I was there
In contrast,
I see the cactus you gave on my birthday morning every day-unless I lose a few days out shopping for vegetables and plants-
Either way,
I still water it
Just cant grab it
I had something I never thought I'd get again
met someone I guessed I'd never know
All these exotic vegetables are sold at places I dont have a map of in my head
All these cactuses sold in retro cool 'important' protentious shops I feel uncomfortable walking in
You said we'd never kiss
We did
You said we'd never have sex
We did
We even said 'I love you'
We even held hands!
You said we'd never be together
We aint
Everywheres a memory
so many pavements trod over too many times
Those memories are still there
through dozens of frenzied Friday nights
and moody Monday mornings
by millions of hipsters
bankers
and lovers
Courgettes and cactuses
thats all I've got
