London Rush

Expert walking, held up only by the incompetence of others
You've got to learn to walk in London, and you are your own teacher
Don't stop, because you're holding up the World
I don't even use the pavement, I step in the road, avoid the rush, it's a trick I learnt through frustration
Walking behind two slow African ladies is the worse, stuck behind a family of Italians taking pictures is not on
Join the jet stream of big white businessmen, that's a quick trip, but avoid them coming the other way or get a barg into your left shoulder at high speed
Just keep walking
Why are you in my way? Slowing up my journey, slowing up my progress, slowing down my day, I've got things to do, don't you know that?
Don't stop, never stop, there's no time to stop in London. No time to find a pound and buy a big issue from the man with grubby hands
Got to get my train so I can't dig out my loose change and do something nice, as this young girl sits there shivering cross legged on the floor, oblivious to the rush
Too late to listen to the song being played on a three stringed guitar by the Chinese man huddled up high over the river Thames
It's a race, but not on the track, it's on the concrete streets
I'm walking and I'm going to win, even though I don't know who I'm racing most of the time
There’re obstacles all around
Why would you walk next to each other, and hold hands, going slow? Single file please!
The man's red, it doesn't matter, the cars aren't moving-not that fast anyway, I'll make it, what they going to do, take me down?
I'm clear
Held up again, and for what? More traffic!
Oh no, the man in the grey coat is next to me, I thought I rushed ahead of him at the last set of lights, all my risks pointless, all my progress lost
Can't let him beat me
I can't wait, I zip across
Yes, I got here, I won
I'm not even late, I'm not even early; in fact, I had no time of arrival, or place to be
All I have is a wasted pound in my pocket and the faint recollection of a song I never heard
So what was the rush?
