They’re all out in the shed
in a cardboard box wrapped up
in PVC.
Black silk shirt with red stripes
And a shoelace tie. Cool wasn’t
a word back then for kid on Saturday
afternoon hops at the ballroom.
Shoes took over. So long the ends
curled up.
They hurt my feet.
My Hardy Amies jacket with sloping
pockets ousted by leather with 59 on it.
But it didn’t go with Levis
and a box jacket suit with short lapels
but suits were out anyway.
Replaced by hipsters
over corduroy cardies.
Shirts grew flowers
Jeans grew flares
Soles grew thick enough
to break an ankle.
Stripy tank-tops replaced Ben's
Sherman shirts with
a pleat up the back
four inch collars under
my canvas South Sea Bubble
Budgie jacket.
I got a proper job
Gave Punk a miss
Tailored suits were back
Lacoste polos for weekends
and a company Cortina.
Making money in Thatcher’s
world of fashion
killing my desire
to stand out from the rest.
Bland is cool. Cool is bland

the who, the kinks? I spotted that bloke who died very early from I think motor neurone disease - can't remember his name but I think he was in the Small Faces? Paul Weller was there. All a bit before my time (apart from Paul Weller)
