Falling Asleep

It arrives after a long wait, shapeless
in curtain-down black. At first, empty
thoughtless numbness. Sound-bites
fleet across consciousness; a few bars
of a symphony; a blues riff; a voice
from the past – all immeasurably brief
clues to what is happening. A face drifts
into view, disappears into a sea-scape;
cliffs from childhood; the sound of Dad’s
long-gone laugh. And darkness descends.
