Small vulnerable, no more than a worm

we learn as we grow to find little rocks;

flotsam; specks of jetsam; left over leaves.

Bits of wisdom to cover ourselves. A shield

from life’s big fish who rely so much

on us to keep them in a lifestyle to which

they are accustomed. We keep their

environment clean and work hard providing

a rich source of income even though

we know they will swallow us up without

a second thought when things get difficult

to satisfy their drive to succeed. We can only

dream we won’t be victims and one fine day

we can spread our brown wings and breathe

clean air living out our final days in peace.

There's no need to apologise, Ed! Wonderful all that the little creatures accomplish, - I was highlighting the particularly specialised net-spinning ones, but I pointed out they all are doing intriguing things, and are of benefit in the river system. You have a bit of metaphoric irony to the unappreciaed help given by the workers to the managers of the systems (though done well we appreciate both!).

I liked the description of their brief adult life. Rhiannon

I was very surprised hom imortant they are to our rivers' health when I was reading about them and I kind of drew a parallel with human life.

Yes this IP is an intersting one. I missed the musical one which was great, but I just didn't have the time to write something for it.

Time is tight at the moment, but I hope things will ease up soon and I can get some serious scribbling done :)

Yes I did feel there was a parallel when I was reading about underestimated, yet how important the are to river systems.
