Nisi

It arrived in a brown envelope. I asked
the lawyer to post it. Wasn’t worth
the effort to ride the bus into town.
Thirteenth of June highlights in pink.
A Friday of course. Our adventure is
over. There’s a lot of things for the skip.
Empty rooms two up two down. We
scrimped and starved. Chafed knuckles
and broke nails to make them sunny.
Now they echo with serious voices
showing the next generation around
so we can have two rooms apiece.
There’s no point in wondering why.
A question without an answer. Neither
of us honest enough to provide one.
And how can we tell a truth when
we really don’t know the reality of
thoughts turning inside our minds.
All that remains to do now is shake
hands and peck farewell kisses and
bury emotions we never dared show.
