I got the idea from a time I worked on a farm when I was young, the weather had been terrible and the farmer said, 'Whatever you do don't be a farmer,...... who'd want to be a farmer?' :)

Do you get black frost there? We do get the dreaded black frost at occasion, it kills the plants. Perhaps that is what you mean with "dieback" ?
