A BETTER MAN

A BETTER MAN.
Oh when will all this madness end?
Will my sad wounded heart ever mend?
I can scarcely believe the sights I've seen,
Inside I feel a hundred,yet I'm only nineteen.
I'm standing here knee-deep in sludge,
I want to move, but my legs won't budge,
Oh God I'm trying so hard to be brave,
But please don't let this place be my grave.
This killing game is really no fun,
And you don't get stronger when you're holding a gun,
You see I'm just a lad thats really trying,
Not to listen to the cries of the dying.
Whilst no-ones looking I'll shed a few tears,
And tell you Lord about my fears,
I'm not a coward and I'll fight for what's right,
But God I don't think I'll last this night.
That last explosion sent my legs to jelly,
And I felt a sickness in the pit of my belly,
For lying by me was my mate Joey Chase,
At least I think it was him but he had no face.
I'm so sick of lying in filth and mud,
And I can't get used to all this blood,
I don't understand why there has to be war,
Oh God please tell me what I'm fighting for.
Is it for my country I'm learning the drill,
Learning to hate and learning to kill?
And at the end of this great master plan,
Will there be a better land? Will I be a better man?
