Just thought I'd let you see how I get my internet access and what I write with. The Raspberry Pi board cost £29. The case the board is in used to hold some playing cards - some careful cutting with a stanley knife was all it needed. Everything else, key board, mouse, old screen, cables and whatever, I scrounged of friends. It works great as a word processor. Doesn't have much memory so I use two pen drives a friend got from work. 

I would have posted this as a forum topic or a blog but I don't seem to have access yet.

I've never seen one of those before - it's amazing! Was it relatively easy to put together, or did you need some skill? I'm sorry you can't start a topic yet - I think it's because you're a new member

Dead easy. It's designed so that a child can use it. You can even buy it with a ready made case for a couple more pounds. You literally clip it together, plug it in and follow the on screen instructions. It's used in primary schools to teach computers and programming, in third world countries to provide cheap internet access, and by inventors to test their prototypes and what have you, and by people like me who don't have that much money. The word processor software that comes with it (or can be downloaded, is free and pretty much like microsoft word from ten years ago).

Like insert, I've never seen anything like that before - fascinating, and a great inexpensive way to get your hands on tech.  I write on a bog standard laptop, and when I'm fed up with my own company I take a pen and notebook (the old fashioned paper kind) out to a cafe and frighten people by staring at them and then writing things down.  I'm not necessarily writing about them, it just helps the ideas.  Also, my favourite cafe makes much better coffee than I do.

I use pen and paper quite a lot too and I like writing in cafes but I like the Raspberry Pi more. It's rough, home made and it's got character, like a punk with attitude. Rollover Apple, step aside Dell, out of the way HP, Sid Vicious is in town!
