“Do you see it?”
Cigarette in my hand.
My last few minutes of life.
I breathe.
It’s a good feeling,
But yet,
With every breath,
I feel a deep, shallow pain inside of me
What do I do?
I wondered about death
For the longest time
For years
Ever since my best friend passed.
He was a happy guy.
And still
To this day
I don’t know why he left so soon.
He was 15.
“See what?”
She looks around.
She doesn’t see the beauty of the world.
She is naïve to the fact that
We are only here for a short amount of time,
And then,
We’re gone,
As though we were never here to begin with.
“See the sunset?
See the…orange in the sky?
See the way everything comes together
To make this the Earth we know?”
She pauses a moment,
I think that she’s thinking.
She takes a look around
At all the things that she loves,
Including me.
“I do see it.”
She finally says.
“I do.”
“Good.”
I stand.
I stretch.
I toss my cigarette to the side and stomp on it.
I was too young to be smoking anyway.
And if it weren’t for myself,
Those things would have been the thing
To have killed me.
“Where are you going?”
“I’ll be right back.
Just off to the house
For something.”
