We are ashamed of our former friends.
We will claim that we did not know,
the means will prophesy the ends.
The latest news from Tripoli sends
our chivalrous image a fatal blow;
We are ashamed of our former friends.
We hope our brief apology mends,
let the damage to our image grow,
the means will prophesy the ends.
We jump to follow recent trends,
cheer the spring that follows snow:
We are ashamed of our former friends.
What future this spring for us portends
is obscure, quite hidden, but even so
the means will prophesy the ends.
The chief who on ourselves depends
will catch the unexpected blow:
we are ashamed of our former friends,
the means will prophesy the ends.

First - This read extremely
First - This read extremely well. No stumbling, or fumbling that often occurs when I am trying to read villanelles. So to get around my nature stammer with them says alot.
Secondly - I like the ( hmmmm what is the word )"legendary" or "mythological" feel of this, even though it is quite obvious to me you are speaking of something present.
Much enjoyed the read :)
