Scapegrace

Reading the Lesson,

no hint of shame,

he exhorts us to be

the good samaritan.

We listen,

believe,

he would not lie

in church?

We know him,

quoting the Nazarene,

this Pharisee,

Our Philistine Philanderer.
 

For he is our choice,

our own foolish fault,

this hypocrite

wallowing in the mud

of our hippo-cracy -

survival of the fattest.

Rapscallion! Rascal!

Scapegrace:

The blonde buffoon

is none of these,

he is Oz,

he is the golden calf

he is the idle idol

promising idylls

on sunlit uplands

over the drowned valleys.

He is...

unimpeachable,

unfortunately.
