Ling Question

Ling was clearly tired
when she asked me
" what makes you smile? "
it was a question
whose answer
would be as separate
from its purpose
as noon is to midnight

"make me smile"
was the unquestion
"make me smile"

"I have worked my owl night
and am now alone
with my electric blanket"

this is what Ling had really said
so I talked about
the junk food habits
of seagulls and foxes

on finding a question
half-eaten in the street
animals will either
eat it
shag it
or run a mile
this is what makes me smile
