The Golden Couple
The year was nineteen sixty three ... it was fifty years ago
It started with the “big freeze” ... with lots of ice and snow
Then Martin Luther had a dream ... that the world was “free at last”
He dreamed that Men would all join hands ... and move on from the past
We had a new Prime Minister ... and a “great” mail train was robbed
Doctor Who was on our screens ... and the Beatles all got mobbed
A gunman took a fateful shot ... and John F Kennedy died
It was news that shook America ... and half the nation cried
But in local news from Sheffield ... the bad news went away
When Edwin married Julia ... it was their special day
They’d known each other for a while ... before she stole his heart
Who would have known, fifty years on ... they’d never be apart
After singing festive Carols ... one chilly Christmas Eve
He finally asked her to go out ... then smiled when she agreed
We all like gifts at Christmas ... it’s a time to spread the love
But she was all he wanted ... like a gift from God above
They had a lovely wedding day ... in the church at Hampden View
And the old hall at St Mary’s ... that’s where they had their “do”
They honeymooned in Blackpool ... it was the “place to be”
They could hold hands on the promenade ... and eat cockles by the sea
Blackpool has a tower ... just like the one in France
With a famous tower ballroom ... where everyone would dance
They briefly lived at Brenda’s house ... before they had their own
Then they lived on Boyce Street ... which was Edwin’s childhood home
Life changed for them in sixty five ... with the patter of tiny feet
With Steven first then Anne-Marie ... their family was complete
Their life was busy with the kids ... and girls’ brigade and scouts
But they always made time for the church ... and for helping others out
Julia’s working life was full ... she could take on any role
Whilst Edwin worked in Hathersage ... he was busy selling coal
And now they’re both retired ... and that’s the way it goes
But the grandkids and the garden ... will keep them on their toes
They’ve lived a good and fruitful life ... since they said their vows
And half a century has passed ... from that day until now
So Julia and Edwin ... we’re all here because of you
To wish you lots of love ... and luck, for many more years too
Congratulations

A lovely story and tribute,
A lovely story and tribute, and an interesting 'snapshot' of 1963 too. May God's blessing (more than luck!) continue with them!
