A Tribute to George

George Edward Beer
He was born in nineteen thirty… and was ten during the blitz
He found a lovely silky shirt… from a house that was in bits
With a middle name of Edward… he may have been called Ted
But like an old school Yorkshire man… he was known as Judd instead
He did two years National Service… he cooked meals and baked some bread
He served his country as a chef… and kept the troops well fed
He married Toots at twenty five… and they drove each other mad
But they had six kids during that time… so it can’t have all been bad
Some kids look like their parents… some kids are a dead ringer
But the likeness they all got from him… was a crooked little finger
He drove the hammer at Turton Platts… that’s where he did his time
When Sheffield was a powerhouse… and steel was in its prime
He finished work through ill health… then didn’t get out that much
Because he looked like forest Gump… with callipers and crutch
He had a lot of feathered friends… he bred budgies just for fun
He also raced some pigeons… they were quick and often won
His garden was another love… he was always in his shed
There were plants of every colour… in a pot or flower bed
He liked to play harmonica… he played all different tunes
And the grandkids used to love it… when he’d dabble on the spoons
He listened to Madonna… and he had a love for Kylie
I’m sure if he was here today… he’d be rocking out to Miley
He was liked and loved by everyone… when he lived at Abbey Grange
And now that he’s no longer there… I bet they find it strange
But he’ll always be remembered… and our pain will go away
And his memory lives in all of us… until our dying day
So George, we’ve missed your smiley face… It’s been a lonely year
But you’ll never be forgotten… the lovely George (Judd) Beer
