The noose of walking boot and welly
and the occasional incautious stilletto
loosens: now
the fresh sprung grass
reclaims the Common ground
Freedoms grow
and all are joined around
with scent and song
of sex and bounderies.
Unclipped from the blundering sundering leash
of Man's best friend
fears slip away-
deer and rabbits doze
in the sun's sight;
easy foxes too busy
in these lazy days
to seek their dens
But those creatures
whom Man took from Eden
and recreated to be his food
and livelihood
and to whom they look
as we do God
are shot
under the well used blind eye
of a Heaven that knows funeral pyres are barbecues
without full bellies at the end.
