It was a cliff
the time between my birth
and meeting you.
Then you came like the sea
everyday
the tide would be in
lapping at the stone face
turning it to sand.
Offering when I opened my eyes
or reached out a hand
to fill the breach
you made
me sure of my worth
because you were.
We walked together
But the tide went out
and always will be.
A few things of yours like lees
I'll keep forever
and remember in my sleep
when I was drunk with joy.
I did all I could not to let you go.
It was not my fault.
when I think of you now
I taste salt.
