Carbon-dated flames

Lick the chimney

Dancing as they go.

Flickering, flying

Weaving one-off patterns

Hypnotic dreams

In mellow orange and yellow

Of long dead forests

Fade to grey

As ashes do.

We heat by oil (no gas in our village) and the open fire is a real blessing; especially if one has nowhere pressing to be....
