Peterloo Remembered
The living tombs of Hell
Are crammed with evil men.
Their mortal misdeeds
Signed with innocent blood.
Noble victories lauded,
Waterloo's nobility extolled,
Yet common men
in innocent obedience
Were slain that day.
Wellington raise aloft a hero
Honest John a forgotten zero.
‘Pass the Port,
We’ll raise a glass
To the common sort’
War is evil, it gives no freedom
The shame of St Peters Field
Too soon was hidden.
A crust of bread, was all they sought,
Nobilitly’s Flashman sword
Scythed and swept
At a hope that would not die.
Mary Hayes scarce survived
That awful day.
Trodden by equine innocence,
But led by evil men.
Thank you Mary for my freedom
And may you rest in peace.

I was delighted to see this
I was delighted to see this piece. Peterloo is a much neglected part of our history. My kids, one of whom took History GCSE, were never taught anything about it at school, or indeed about the Chartists or the Tolpuddle Martrys. Or Tom Paine. Let's hope Mike Leigh's film will do something to redress the balance.

We all learn about Waterloo,
We all learn about Waterloo, but few of us have ever heard of Peterloo. Good tribute. Good read.
