You live a long life and full,
you watch your children grow,
become as old as you once were
and eventually, inevitably
life slips from you.
And what do you leave behind?
If you are lucky
some might remember a line
from a poem you once wrote,
but even then it’s unlikely
they will remember
who wrote it.
They will have
their own lives to live,
their own children to worry about
and their own poems to write.
Maybe it’s better
to think about what you will
remember when you slip from life,
perhaps a hand slipping into yours
and leading you to a pool of light,
the poets pool, the pool from which
your inspiration flowed.
