Battle of the rings

This war started long ago
No one quite remembers why
Maybe one was good, one bad
Or it could be just a lie
One fought for truth and what’s right
The other one not so much
Mother nature said enough
And cursed them both with her touch
To spend all time, as a tree
This was to be their shared fate
It was meant to bring them peace
But all that came was more hate
Locked together still they fight
Casting spells and other things
For each new year saw it grow
So they fought to claim its rings
And they battled on and on
Becoming more unstable
So as their fate would have it
That tree became a table
In my living room it sits
Dented and scarred from their pain
Yet even now they still fight
Over new rings made from stain
