It was quite fun sailing on an old fashioned fishing boat. There was a fresh breeze blowing, but even so, the boat was moving very slowly in Jennifer Jane’s opinion. Every now and again a much stronger puff of wind would come howling across the water.
At first, Jennifer Jane made sure she was standing on the weather side of the deck, in case her weight was needed to keep the boat upright. She soon realised that where she was standing made no difference at all.
The boat would heel very slightly in the strong gusts, before come upright again with very little increase in speed.
On the other hand, where she was used to bobbing over waves in her canoe or either of her dad’s boats, this one smashed through the waves in a shower of spray. It was rather like standing on a rock at the seaside in rough weather!
Even so, it didn’t seem too long before the captain pointed out the wishing fog just ahead, Abigail waited until they were well and truly inside, before calling out for Timber Creek.
It was with a great sense of relief that Jennifer Jane saw the timber yard ahead of them as they came out of the fog and began to beat up towards it. Phil ran down the jetty to meet them, as they tied up alongside and began to get the scooter back on dry land.
“I might have guessed it was you,” he said when he saw who it was coming ashore. “I know most of the boats that come in here and this one’s a stranger to me.”
Abigail wiggled her fingers to fill the fisherman’s hold with fresh fish, while Jennifer Jane dried the salt spray from the scooter, before opening the spare glitter box.
“Right then, are we all happy now?” asked Abigail.
The captain of the fishing boat was looking in disbelief at the huge shoal of fish flapping about in his hold. Phil was chatting to Jennifer Jane about the advantages of the replacement for her broom.
At last Abigail interrupted the Jennifer Jane’s chatter. “Come along now, I’m starving. If we hurry I’m sure we’ll be in time for a late breakfast at the Home!”
Dad looked up from his gardening as Jennifer Jane arrived home one hour later.
“I’ve got a lot to tell you both,” she said, “and I’ve also brought a lot of catalogues for you to look at, you should find some of them very interesting!”
Dad looked at his watch. “Only a few hours later than you said,” he joked, “we’ll have to put this down in my book; it must be some sort of record!”
