Even on the first day she had a look at the dam, she could see that the water level was going down much more quickly than expected. She couldn’t go on the next day as it poured with rain.
It rained without stopping for the rest of the week and she was beginning to worry that it might be falling so fast, that the water level in the lake wouldn’t drop. So one Friday evening after work, she went to the dam in spite of the rain to have another look.
The water level was still falling, although not quite as quickly as before, while a quick flight to the smaller dams showed that they were holding up well against the water coming down from the hills. Everything seemed to be working to plan, so she flew home for a nice hot bath and her evening meal.
The following Monday she stopped for a chat with Abigail before going on to Esme’s shop.
“I don’t think this is natural,” said Abigail, looking at the rain still pouring down outside. “It’s almost as if someone wants the dam to fill right up and then burst to wash away the whole of Lurbridge.”
Jennifer Jane thought about this for a moment. “I wonder if all this is aimed at me?” she asked. “First of all there was a dragon who was asked to flame just me. Then this time the dam only started to crumble when I stepped on it. It was perfectly safe for any body else to walk on.”
Then she had an idea, “It’s almost as if someone like Malcolm is trying to get rid of me again. After all I wouldn’t be very popular if the dam collapsed just because I walked on it. It wouldn’t hurt me because of my safety spell, but it could damage the village and possibly even kill lots of people who live there.”
Abigail looked serious. “I think you may be right my girl. The only person who is in the clear is Malcolm himself. He doesn’t even know who you are any more. Can you think of anyone else who you might have upset recently? Whoever it is, it has to involve magic.”
Jennifer Jane couldn’t imagine anyone in the alternate world disliking her to the point of trying to get rid of her. After all most of the things she did were for the benefit of those who had problems to solve and she usually managed to find an answer for them.
“I’ve just had an idea,” said Abigail with a big grin, “I know it’s what you’re supposed to be good at, but I think we can solve the present trouble very quickly if you and Esme are willing to help.”
