However there was still a problem. Looking round she couldn‘t feel any wind at all from any direction. She wondered how on earth she could find where the wind had gone, and then she remembered Fred. If her geography was correct he wasn’t too far away at the speeds that the cloud could reach. She could ask him if he’d seen anything of the North Wind lately and if he knew where he was likely to be found.
“Can you take me near Bannockburn?” she asked, “if I can find a friend of mine who lives near there, he might be able to tell me how to find the North Wind and then I hope to persuade him to blow the snow away for us.”
“Your wish is my command young lady,” said Captain Blizzard with a smile of relief.
He gave an order to his crew, the cloud rising into the air and turning at the same time. Jennifer looked carefully over the side to see if she could spot the area of caves where Fred lived. Only a few moments later she had to ask the captain to slow down and fly lower.
Once she saw a likely place she had the cloud slowed to a walking pace and climbed down the ladder nearly to the ground. She began calling Fred’s name as she flew slowly along, giving the captain directions from time to time so that she could explore the areas where she could see caves.
At last her efforts were rewarded and she saw Fred’s head peering cautiously from a cave mouth.
“Stop,” she called to the captain, then she jumped off the ladder and ran over to the dragon. “We’re looking for the North Wind, I don’t suppose you happen to have seen him recently?”
Fred laughed, “Clarence has been telling me stories about the sort of luck you seem to have when you’re dealing with the fairy folk, but I’ve never really believed him until now. The North Wind is resting in the cave next to mine. He’s been blowing a gale in the Arctic and was so worn out that he couldn’t keep awake for long enough to fly home. I don’t think he’ll be of much help to you, he’s far too tired to blow the smallest puff.”
Jennifer Jane stood dejectedly for a moment. What other ways could she think of to try and rescue Frosty? Fred watched her as she thought rapidly for a moment and then laughed as her face broke into a smile.
“You’ve just had one of your clever ideas, haven’t you!”
