The double glazing salesman 4/12

Jennifer Jane followed him back into the Witches’ Home workshop. Robert put the wings on top of one of the benches and began discussing the problem with Dave.
“I think we should extend the handles further forward and strap the harness lower down so that you can balance in a horizontal position. After all, birds fly with their legs trailing behind them and I think you’ll have to do the same.”
Dave thought for a moment. “I agree with you of course. I think if we rigged up a line to the harness from the roof, then I could lay down and let you find the balance point for my particular weight. It’s a bit of a pity because I had hoped that any one would be able to use them, but I suppose that the rig must be adjusted to the balance of the user!”
He fixed one end of a strong rope to a rafter in the roof quite easily, simply by jumping up and tying it there.
“There are quite a lot of advantages to only weighing a couple of pounds,” he said grinning, as he floated gently back to the workshop floor.
For the next hour, the two men worked on the attachment and balance of Dave’s wings. Then at last they agreed that the next step was another trial. A cheer went up as they came out of the workshop.
There were one or two smiles as he flapped vigorously and rose up in the air, then gasps of astonishment as he swung himself horizontal and flapped slowly forwards in level flight. He gained a little height as he flew round in a circle before turning and gliding down to his starting point, amidst loud cheers from the crowd.
Abigail had found Jennifer Jane and come to stand next to her. “Totally impractical of course, but I must say it looks as if he’s enjoying himself.”
“That’s the whole idea, I think he’s hoping to fly off together with mum, rather like going for a walk but with better views.”
“Well providing he only does it round here it should be OK, the people in this world are used to all manner of strange things. He ought to be able to get a few free drinks as well, showing off that set-up over at the George and Dragons.”
The crowd was beginning to break up now that Dave had landed. Jennifer Jane caught up with him just as he was twiddling his weight back to normal.
“Come on young lady, time to go home and let your mum into the secret. A few minor adjustments and we should be ready to make another set for her. You can have one as well if you like.”
“Well if you want me to join in trips with you and mum, then I’d be pleased, although I’d prefer to fly my scooter for working journeys.”
