Dave woke up with a bit of a start. For a moment he wondered where he was and then smiled to himself as he remembered his first proper flight. It was dark outside but at least it had stopped raining, although the wind seemed as strong as ever.
He was just going to close his eyes again, when he heard a faint noise nearby. Something else was in the cave with him. Fortunately there was just sufficient moonlight to let him to see a little, so he stared anxiously towards the source of the noise, hoping it was caused by something harmless.
He remembered Jennifer Jane telling stories about the wild animals that lived in the alternate world, although at least she’d made the dragons stop eating people.
As the padding noise got louder, so Dave became increasingly nervous. At least whatever it was walked along the ground, so he twiddled himself lighter and floated gently up to the cave roof just in case.
He was only just in time! As he moved up in the air, there was a loud howl and several large animals charged towards him. He twiddled a couple more times just in case he started to sink, then lay comfortably on the cave roof, facing down towards the floor.
He’d been very lucky! As far as he could tell there was a small pack of wolves directly beneath him. He could see their eyes reflecting the moonlight as they stared up at him and they didn’t seem at all friendly.
He stayed awake for the rest of the night hoping that the pack would go away when daylight came, but he was wrong. Unfortunately he’d left his wings on the cave floor, so he couldn’t escape by flying, into what was by now becoming a beautiful sunny morning.
Then he started thinking, the wolves couldn’t have been in the cave when he arrived, or they’d never have waited to attack him until he was asleep. They must have come into the cave from the back; perhaps there was another entrance in that direction. Well, there was only one way to find out.
