George was getting a bit worried. One after another, his drivers were coming back to Lower Dene with tales of damaged goods and problems with their carts. He was going to have to make a complaint to a blacksmith whose iron tyre had broken and come off the wheel rim and a harness maker whose straps had broken as a cart was going up hill. The driver had fortunately been walking beside his horse to lighten the load at the time, but the cart had careered backwards down the hill and smashed itself up as it turned over near the bottom. Most of the goods being carried had survived but the loss of a cart was worrying.
A knock on the door heralded the arrival of Henry with his tale of woe.
“That’s six disasters we’ve had in the last two days,” said George, “I’m beginning to think there’s something more than just coincidence in this lot. If we had any local competitors I’d think they were trying to put us out of business, but I keep thinking back to that trouble we had with the pigeons and that was caused by witchcraft! I wonder if this is another attempt by the same person, although how they can get to be in so many places at once is beyond me!”
“When in trouble, send for Jennifer Jane,” suggested Henry, “she got you out of the mess last time!”
