“I don’t know how she does it,” said Abigail, “but whenever that child is really wanted, she always manages to go missing. Not a trace of her anywhere I can reach!”
“Well if she’s running true to form,” replied Dave, “she’ll turn up again in a day or two and we’ll find that she’s solved the mystery all by herself. I wouldn’t mind betting she’ll have that Georgina in tow as well. Come on Mary love, let’s go for a flight over to the Squires house and see how his new central heating is coming along.”
Dave and Mary flapped off towards Lurbridge and took a turn around the timber yard before intending to fly off to visit the squire.
“It’s always worth a look around here,” said Dave, “quite interesting sailing ships come up here sometimes and there’s always a hope that Jonah and the Black Cat might turn up and give us all a laugh!”
Sure enough a topsail schooner was coming in from the sea as they arrived. Dave and Mary flew towards it down low over the water.
“Always buzz them if I’m here, said Dave. “If they know me they give me a wave and a cheer, if they’ve never seen me before it gives the crew a good laugh and something to talk about in the pub tonight.”
Neither of them expected what actually happened. Standing on the deck waiting to go ashore as soon as the ship docked, were two strange adults and Jennifer Jane. They in their turn were nearly as surprised, when a strange man and woman wearing huge artificial wings flew down and landed on the deck beside them. Both the strangers unbuckled their wings and ran across the deck, the lady going straight to Jennifer Jane to give her a big cuddle. Jennifer Jane immediately burst into tears.
“Wherever did you find her and why have you had to come back here with her?” asked Dave.
Lucy began explaining what had happened, when Mary interrupted.
“Don’t you remember Dave? This is Lucy the hairdresser and her policeman friend who helped our daughter escape from Smallport after Malcolm kidnapped her. It wouldn’t surprise me if Georgina kidnapped her this time and purely by chance dropped her off in the same place.”
At that moment Abigail arrived in a hurry on her broom. “I thought I’d have another go at checking out her whereabouts and I’ve just found her here at the timber yard!”
Lucy explained that Jennifer Jane had lost her memory again and Abigail quickly twiddled the spell to get her back to normal.
