For the first time in two days Jennifer Jane smiled. Abigail and her parents listened carefully as she explained what had happened during her adventures.
“I know I’ve said it before and I’ll probably have to say it again,” said Abigail, “but you do have the most amazing luck young lady. You could have been dropped off anywhere and yet by some chance you managed to get yourself left at Smallport and picked up by the only two people who would remember you from your last adventure there! I’ll have to check out Margarita when we get back to the Witches’ Home, but somehow I still don’t think that’s her real name. The cottage makes things a bit awkward, if she can move around like that she could have gone anywhere and we won’t stand a chance of finding her unless she tries to have another go at George or you. She’ll certainly be upset when she finds out that her money has disappeared. At least George hasn’t lost anything except a days work carting non-existent iron about the country.”
“She did say that her mother had been killed by George when she tried to bring back the old days when dragons still ate people!”
“Not too much help I’m afraid, George has killed quite a few wicked witches in his time and I don’t suppose for a minute that he can remember every one. Now then how about everyone coming back to the refectory for a drink and a bite to eat. Dave and Mary can make their own way, I’ll pop off to see Arthur and get him to come over with his box and collect the rest of you. I daresay John and Lucy would like to see a real giant again as some small reward for bringing you safely home. Jennifer Jane can ride with him as well, then we’ll have to find her a broom, until her dad can get her another scooter!”
Later that afternoon, Abigail and the Bells, together with John and Lucy, were relaxing after a delicious meal in the Witches’ Home refectory. The couple from Smallport were still talking together excitedly about the thrill of seeing a real live giant and being carried across the river in a huge box to the Witches’ Home.
The others were discussing ways and means of preventing George from being attacked again by Georgina or whatever her real name was.
“Unfortunately Jennifer Jane’s recent adventure has lost us the element of surprise.”
“I’m ever so sorry,” said Jennifer Jane, “I really didn’t think she’d know I was there if I stayed invisible!”
“She now knows that we are aware of her activities,” continued Abigail ignoring the interruption, “but of course what we don’t know is where she might be hiding in that cottage of hers. She can go to any world she likes whether magic works there or not and we can only check out the magical alternatives if we want to be able to come back in a reasonable time. If we’re honest the only positive things to come out of this exercise, are the facts that we now know why she is trying to ruin George and we’ve stopped Eve from travelling to this world and making a mess of things! I still have to sort out her future with the Grand Council. In the meantime I suggest we go back to the position we were in before all this started and return to our homes and try to think of a way to put an end to this problem”
