The next time Alex was taken to the park he was expecting to see his new friends and have another adventure with them.
He started to walk across to the bushes where he was used to meeting them when a football flew past him followed by a big boy.
“Out of the way kid,” shouted the boy just as some others rushed up and kicked the ball right into the bushes.
“Goal,” shouted the newcomers. “Not fair” said the first boy, this kid got in my way.”
Alex was a bit frightened and ran back to his mummy.
“Some nasty big boys are kicking a football into the bushes where I want to go and play!”
“Well if you must play in those particular bushes why don’t you get the Horrible Green Hairy Monsters who live there to chase them away,” laughed Mummy. “Or else just go and find some other clumps of bushes to play in that are long way away from the boys.”
Alex had a good think and then decided to go and see his friends anyway. After all they had frightened him before he knew they were lonely, perhaps they could frighten the big boys away as well.
“Hey kid where do you think you’re going?” asked one of the boys playing just outside the bushes.
“I’m going to get the Horrible Green Hairy Monster who lives in these bushes to come and chase you all away!” said Alex more bravely than he really felt.
“Well if you do find him we’ll all come into the bushes and chase him away instead! Replied the boy”
Alex was a bit worried as he began looking for Hercules. After all there were several boys and each one of them was much bigger than either him or his friends.
He walked carefully through the bushes quietly calling out “Hercules” and had just got to the iron railings round the edge of the park before he found him.
“I’ve had an idea to make those nasty noisy children go away and play somewhere else.” He said.
“Oh good,” said Hercules. “What with the shouting and kicking their football into our home we’re beginning to be frightened about getting trampled on or hit by that great big ball.”
Alex waited until Hector and Lysander came to see what was going on before he explained his idea to make the boys go away.
“I think we should wait until they come just a little way into the bushes. Then I’ll run past them screaming that I’m being chased by a horrible green hairy monster. Now the clever part is that you all shout that you’re going to come and eat me up in those deep loud voices that you have.
“But they won’t really be frightened when they see us will they?”
“That’s the second part of the clever part,” replied Alex. “If Hercules chases me swishing a big branch about making the bushes just behind me wave around, and Hector and Lysander jump up and down to make a sound like someone very heavy walking towards us, then I think the boys will all be frightened and run away with me.”
The three little men were very pleased to be called by their new hero names, and agreed with Alex that was what they would, do being very careful not to be seen by the big boys.
Alex waited until one of the boys just came into the bushes looking for the ball.
“Help, help mummy I’m being chased by a horrible green hairy monster,” he screamed at the top of his voice as he ran out of the bushes into the park.
“Don’t be such a baby,” began the boy looking for his ball. Then he stopped as he heard a huge voice shouting, “I’M A HORRIBLE GREEN HAIRY MONSTER AND I’M GOING TO EAT YOU ALL UP.”
While he was hesitating he began to hear what sounded like huge heavy footsteps coming towards him and he lost his nerve and ran after Alex, shouting, “there really is green hairy monster and its coming after me as well; run for your lives!”
Alex ran over to his mum while the boys ran away to their homes.
“That was very clever of you,” said Mummy, “however did you manage it?”
“I’ve made friends with the horrible green hairy monster,” said Alex, “and he agreed to help me chase the nasty boys away.”
