"Well?" said the witch.
"Easy," said Jennifer Jane, "all we have to do is go to the goblin broom maker and get you a new broom and then use one of my wishes to make it fly you home."
"Now, why didn't I think of that?" said the witch, "It's a very good idea, I think it should work perfectly."
Off they went together to the goblin village and very soon Jennifer Jane was handing the witch a brand new broom.
"There's no charge," said the goblin who made the brooms for the village, "after all, you've done us so many favours in the past, that we are only too pleased to be able to do something for you in return."
The witch carried her shiny new broom excitedly back to the place where Jennifer Jane had first found her. "Now then," she said, "please make your wish for my broomstick to become a magic flying one."
Jennifer Jane wished.
Lieutenant Moonshine arrived in less time than it takes to say "Jack Robinson". She knew what was wanted without being asked and had brought a bucket full of glittery stuff which she painted all over the broom.
"There you are," she said proudly when she had finished, "that's a broom to be proud of."
"Thank you very much," said both Jennifer Jane and the witch at once.
The witch climbed on her sparkling new broomstick and flew around over their heads in a small circle. Then landed carefully on the path beside them.
"That's wonderful," she said happily, "I'll be able to get home in time for tea quite easily now. Would you both like a little ride, as a sort of thank you present?"
Jennifer Jane and Lieutenant Moonshine climbed on behind the witch. Off they went, heading towards Jennifer Jane's home.
"Won't people see us?" asked Jennifer Jane.
"Oh no, humans can't usually see the fairy folk at all" replied Lieutenant Moonshine, "you're rather special because you’re young and willing to help solve some of our problems."
The witch was giggling to herself up at the front. "Hold on to your hats, we're going to loop the loop," she called out. And they did.
They zoomed down over the main road near Jennifer Jane's home. They were going so fast that the cars all appeared to be going backwards. Jennifer Jane looked down and suddenly had a very bright idea indeed.
When they landed back in the wood, she asked Lieutenant Moonshine, "Could you arrange for all the witches' brooms to have a built in wish that could be used to tell you when they had broken down and then if you had some of your fairies ready to go and repaint the magic on to the brooms, none of the witches would ever have to worry about being stranded a long way from home again?"
"Gosh, that's a smashing idea," said the witch.
"I think we could manage it," said Lieutenant Moonshine thoughtfully. She looked at the witch and raised her eyebrows slightly. The witch gave a slight nod.
"Actually, I got the idea just now from seeing a car being mended by one of the breakdown organisations," said Jennifer Jane rather modestly.
"I'll have to go back to the Wish Warehouse and work out the details," said Lieutenant Moonshine “but I'm quite sure we can come to some arrangement."
So the witch hurried off to her tea and chocolate Swiss roll, while the Fairy Moonshine disappeared in her usual hurry, leaving a cloud of dust behind her. Jennifer Jane went home to her tea feeling very pleased with the afternoon's adventure.
And would you believe it, she had chocolate Swiss roll for her tea!
Now that may sound like the end of the story but about two weeks later, the postman left a letter at Jennifer Jane's house addressed to Miss J. Bell and inside was a very official looking card which read 'Honorary Member, Broomstick Breakdown Club.'
"Now what have you got there?" asked her Father.
"Oh just a sort of thank you for a favour I was able to do for a friend," replied Jennifer Jane. After all she couldn't really explain, could she?
