Some more of the class were coming back now and the teacher congratulated each one as they returned. After a while she blew her whistle and waved for those still searching to return.
“About one third of you managed to find the right line, that’s about average. Some of you are more sensitive to magic than others, it won’t make any difference to your abilities, but it should help make you become better at understanding the power of witchcraft.”
To be honest, Jennifer Jane didn’t pay too much attention to the rest of the lesson. The line ran from the direction of Tasmin’s cave straight through all obstacles to the drawbridge of the Witches’ home. It would seem that the line must continue under the Witches’ Home into the magic that led to her own world.
Trying to remember her navigation lessons, she guessed that the other end must continue on to Arthur’s castle and possibly even beyond Happy Valley, although fortunately that place was well off to one side.
As soon as the class finished, she ran through to the other side of the home and began walking slowly and carefully across the lawn. Sure enough, it only took a few moments to find the line and its direction. As she suspected, it went right across the lawn and disappeared into the magic haze on the other side of the river.
Somebody behind her laughed. “I see you’ve just had your first lesson in the theory of magic.”
She turned round and found Abigail standing there, with an amused look on her face.
“I don’t know what you’re thinking of doing, although I expect it’ll mean that you disappear again for a week or so, but just remember that your teacher warned you about the increase in magic power near those lines.”
Jennifer Jane grinned back and promised to be careful, then went back through the Home to take her next lesson with Esmerelda.
