Thinking about it afterwards, she realised that she must have banged her head as she fell and lost consciousness for a moment. After a while, she began to take an interest in her surroundings and tried to work out where she was and what had happened to her. It wasn’t quite dark, although the moonlight seemed to have disappeared.
Looking around carefully she began to see that she’d fallen into some sort of cave. The light was very poor, but seemed to be coming from the hole in the roof that she’d fallen through.
As her eyes became accustomed to the light, she noticed that everything she could see was strangely misty. It was rather like she imagined a person would feel, if she was sitting in a big bowl of golden syrup. She could see through it fairly well, but found it hard work moving about.
She stood up with some difficulty, having to use her hands and arms to help her; it was almost like swimming. Then she remembered the torch her dad had made her bring. Fortunately it had survived the fall, so she switched it on to see if the extra light would help her see any further. It didn’t help as much as she’d hoped, but at least she could see a little more than she had before.
She seemed to have fallen into a rather strange tunnel. The torchlight showed her one wall, so she made her way slowly across to have a closer look. The wall was quite smooth when she felt it and she could see the tunnel continuing in a straight line off into the darkness. Out of curiosity she began walking along to see if there was an easy way out.
After only a few yards she was feeling quite puffed out, it was very hard work having to use a swimming motion with her hands. This would never do, so she decided to use a little magic, in spite of being in her own world. She patted herself on the head and began twiddling to make herself lighter.
She’d only done the first twiddle, when she banged her head quite painfully on the tunnel roof. That was strange; it usually took ten or twelve twiddles to make herself light enough to float.
She put half a twiddle of weight back very carefully, until she was only just touching the ground with her feet. After that, she found it quite easy to ‘swim’ along the tunnel and was soon making quite fast progress.
A few minutes later she spotted a dim light in the distance and stopped underneath it. It was another light shining through the roof. She felt rather like being on an underground railway, with the lights marking the stations.
That thought gave her the idea of floating up to the ceiling and having a look through the hole to see if she could find out where she’d got to. Half a twiddle later, she carefully poked her head out into the moonlight.
To her great astonishment she immediately recognised where she was. She was looking out of a hole in the ground in one corner of the graveyard of her local church. After that it only took a few seconds thought to solve the mystery.
