The saddle made the journey much more comfortable and she approached the village excitedly, expecting to see large areas of ripening crops. To her horror, there was nothing to be seen but bare earth in any of the fields she'd treated with magic a week ago. Not only that but the adjacent grass where the villagers grazed their animals, was looking very short and patchy.
She didn't know what had happened but something must have gone wrong. The 'Plough' was crowded with people as she walked through the door. It seemed that the whole village must be there waiting for her.
"Here she is," someone shouted, "you've got a lot of explaining to do. Blooming witchcraft!"
The landlord waved his arms and shouted over the noise for silence.
"Now then young lady, I don't know what you did to those fields but it's not only the crops that grew, everything else in our fields grew as well. Now we've got rabbits as big as ponies and they've not only eaten all the crops but they've nearly finished eating the pasture land as well. What do you propose to do about that?"
Jennifer Jane didn't know what to say. Perhaps she should have read all the paperwork attached to the spell before she'd used it. Not surprisingly the farmers were all very cross indeed and she'd have to say something quickly, before they became violent.
"I think the best thing I can do, is to go and find one of the senior witches and get her to come here and sort things out."
The villagers watched her climb back on her broom and she flew off amidst threats of all the terrible things that they'd do to her, if she didn't get things right next time. Long before they expected her to return, there was a flash and a bang, just outside the pub door.
The apprentice had returned accompanied by a senior witch dressed in a pointed hat and a cloak impressively covered with glittering badges.
