May Day

May Day
Today is May Day so I’ll be seen
With all my friends on the village green
Midst crowds around a striped maypole
Dancing like villagers did of old
Else dressed in white with stick in hand
With knee high bells in time to a band
As a Moorish dancer in the street
Amazing all with my rhythmic feet
But I’m not:
For Kingston is in chaos
The road menders have come
They’ve diverted all the buses
Annoying everyone
The footpaths all have signs up
That say ‘use the other side’
Just try and cross a one way street
There’s nowhere safe to hide
There are holes along the pavement
There are holes along the road
But can you see a workman?
There are none, I’ve been told
One day they’ll be finished
But when they all have gone
Show me the improvements
I’ll bet there’s hardly one
Maybe an extra hump or two
To slow the traffic down
And that’ll be of no help
To clear congestion in the town
So why not dig up all the concrete
And leave the earth alone
At least there would be greens again
So I could get my dancing done.
