Malcolm stood up and turned round in surprise, “I’m not anyone’s uncle...” then his jaw dropped in amazement, “why it’s you, you little!... however did you manage to...” he tried to raise his hand, but Abigail had already stopped him from using magic.
Malcolm struggled for a moment, while he slowly went redder and redder in the face trying to cast a spell to get rid of ‘Joan’.
Lucy came in to the workshop. “That’s Joan’s uncle,” she said pointing at Malcolm.
The veins on Malcolm’s forehead were and standing out in a very dangerous looking way, while his face was beginning to turn a strange purple colour before he finally gave a little gasp and fell onto the floor unconscious.
“I’ll just make sure he’s forgotten his magic powers again when he wakes up,” said Abigail “and then I’ll do the same for his sister, just in case.”
Lucy came and spoke to Jennifer Jane in a rather timid way. “Are you really a witch who can do proper magic?”
Jennifer Jane laughed, patted herself on the head and twiddled her thumb, until she slowly began to float up in the air. The policeman and Lucy both stared at her with rather frightened expressions on their faces.
“Stop showing off,” said Abigail, I know you’re pleased to be home, but that’s no excuse and you should know better than scare people, especially your friends.”
Jennifer Jane came down again. “Sorry,” she said, “here, have a chocolate swiss roll each.”
“Now then, just two problems left,” said Abigail, “I think the best way of dealing with Malcolm and his sister is to send them back with the policeman and let him deal with them. We know magic doesn’t work in his world, so if he makes sure they both stay there, they can’t do any more harm. It’s poetic justice in a way because that’s exactly what they hoped to do to Jennifer Jane. The only remaining worry is to try and find out how they both got their memories and magical powers back in the first place.”
There was a rather embarrassed cough from the back of the crowd. Ermintrude came forward. “I’m terribly sorry, but that man and his sister came into the shop one day when I was on my own and then couldn’t remember why they’d come, so I sold them a bottle of our cure to improve people’s memory.”
“Sounds like very strong stuff,” said Abigail, “I’ll have to have a word with Esmerelda to make sure it’s less powerful in future. I think that tidies everything up thank goodness! Now I expect Jennifer Jane and her parents would like to go home for a good rest and a long chat. I expect there’ll soon be another chapter in Dave’s book,” she said with a grin. “Lucy and her friend can stay here for the night if they wish, then we can all make a fresh start tomorrow.”
Esmerelda came over to Jennifer Jane. “Now that’s all over young lady, perhaps you’d like to turn up for work as usual tomorrow morning.” She smiled happily, “I think your next lesson will have to be about controlling the strength of potions.”
