Dulcibella had been looking at Eve closely; all the while she and Esme had been talking. “Ever seen a dragon? she asked suddenly.
“No of course not don’t be silly, there’s no such thing in real life.”
Dulce grinned toothily, “This way,” she said and walked back towards the house.
Eve went along, wondering what on earth the woman was going to show her, but at least it gave her the opportunity to see inside the house and maybe find out what was really going on.
Shocks followed rapidly, one after the other as the little group came out of the house into the castle courtyard. Eve took one look at the battlements and then turned to look back at the house.
“Whatever happened to the house, it seems to have turned into a castle!”
“When this place was built, things in this world was pretty rough,” said Esmerelda, “so the castle was necessary. There were trolls and unfriendly giants roaming about, let alone dragons. Then young Jennifer Jane came along and had an idea to pacify the dragons and the local giant. The only one she couldn’t sort out was Lurgin the Troll, so she ended up having him killed by one of the senior witches here”
Eve kept quiet; she was beginning to have a funny feeling that the two witches were telling the truth. She was even surer a moment later when they crossed the drawbridge and collected two rather tatty looking brooms.
“You can ride pillion behind me,” said Esme, “I expect you’re used to flying your own broom, but I don’t suppose you’ve brought it today have you!”
Eve was getting really worried now. It seemed she was stuck with two mad women who believed they were real witches and could fly on broomsticks. She couldn’t believe her eyes as the brooms rose into the air and hovered for a moment while Esme and Dulce climbed on.
“Come on, your broom may look posher than this one but I can assure you it usually works perfectly well.”
Dulce gave Eve another nasty grin, as she got on behind Esme and very slowly lifted her feet from the ground. She immediately started to wobble and grabbed Esme round the waist. Then she shut her eyes as the brooms zoomed across the field in front of the castle towards the woods.
“You can open yer eyes now,” cackled Dulce, “here’s your dragon!”
They had flown a little way through the trees and stopped just outside a large cave. Eve thankfully got back down to the ground and looked around. Nothing out of the ordinary, just woodland paths and a cave that didn’t look anything special.
None the less they had certainly flown from the castle, so something peculiar was going on, although she still found it hard to believe it was due to real magic.
Even though she was prepared for something unusual to happen, she squeaked in surprise, as a huge pale green animal’s head peered out carefully from the cave entrance. She was even more surprised and not a little frightened as the rest of the animal came into view and was obviously a real fairy tale dragon. The dragon opened its mouth and Dulce had another of her rather nasty giggling fits, as Eve dodged behind Esme.
