Jennifer Jane crossed over while the owner of the voice was still speaking and had a quick peep under the arch. A troll was there all right, reading aloud from a printed sheet of paper. He didn't look all that old and was scratching his head in bewilderment. Jennifer Jane laughed to herself and hurried on towards the Inn.
A howl of laughter from the customers in the public bar told her that George was there telling his stories about the other world. Nobody ever seemed to believe him, even though they were nearly all true.
"It is true I tell you," George was shouting. "the little boxes let you talk to people hundreds of miles away and they each have a box that lets them talk to you."
"I don't even know the people in the next village," someone shouted back "and even if I did I wouldn't want to talk to them, blooming foreigners."
Everybody roared with laughter again and George jumped down from the bar where he'd been sitting and came over to Jennifer Jane.
"At least you know I'm right," he said, "life is beginning to get a bit frustrating trying to educate these peasants."
"Would you like to get back to a life of adventure?" asked Jennifer Jane.
"I should be so lucky," said George, who occasionally lapsed into other world English when he was talking to her.
"How would you feel about getting rid of a real old fashioned wicked witch?"
"H'm witches are tricky," said George, "but it would make a change from telling stories. Do you know where she is?"
"The witches at the Gate think she's living near Karg's old cave at Hetherside. There's a dragon there who's started eating peasants again and he'll have to be dealt with as well."
"Dragons are easy, witches can be awkward, however with wrongs to right and a dragon to be slain my knightly duty is clear."
Jennifer Jane watched him collect his armour from the doorway of the Inn, while one of the villagers went to fetch his horse. Everyone was serious now, they understood the dangers of witches and dragons and as George rode off towards Hetherside they all cheered and wished him good luck.
