For her part Jennifer Jane was horrified. She’d never seen the dragon before and he might very well roast them alive on his next pass. Whatever the reason for the attack she needed to do something to stop it so that they could talk to him and find out where they were. She made up her mind and tried to remember the spell she’d used so long ago to put out Fred’s flame.
As the dragon turned and headed for them for the second time, she twiddled the especially powerful spell that Abigail had taught her to deal with Fred. An extremely powerful jet of water hurtled out from her fingers and hit the dragon just as he opened his mouth to breathe another jet of fire in their direction.
There was a loud bubbling choking noise followed by a cloud of steam and a thud, as the dragon lost his concentration and hit the ground. The witches rushed over, Jennifer Jane pointing her fingers menacingly at the dragon as he lay there gasping.
“My name is Jennifer Jane; I tamed Tornak the Terrible and defeated the troll Lurgin. One more attempt to flame me and you’re in deep trouble my friend! All we want to know is whereabouts we are, then you can go on your way.”
Morwenna didn’t say a thing, but was looking on admiringly as Jennifer Jane threatened the huge animal. Moggy was hiding behind the front shield of the scooter and getting ready to run for the nearest rock if anything looked like going wrong.
The dragon coughed a couple of times and started to get up. He sat down again quickly as the fingers were pointed straight at him again.
“I haven’t any idea who you are or any of the other names you just mentioned. You’re in Wales if you must know and you’ve just ruined my flame. I’ll never hold up my head again and if a knight should happen by, I’ll just have to run away, what is that going to do for my reputation!”
“Don’t you know Megan or Clarence? They have a baby dragon called Angharad; they can’t live too far away from here!”
The dragon looked at her rather wetly, “No idea who you’re talking about.”
Jennifer Jane thought for a moment and then realised what the dragon had said earlier. He’d been talking about having to run away from knights. The penny suddenly dropped!
“Oh crumbs, I don’t know what we do now,” she said to Morwenna. “We’re not in our England at all; we’re in a parallel version of the country. The one we’re looking for is on the other side of your cottage wall and that’s the one we can’t get back to!”
