“Two witches they was as sure as I’m standing here, One big ‘un and a little ‘un. They arrived on a little two wheeled cart, looked like a kid’s toy it did, they can’t have got far, they didn’t have a horse or nothing!”
“Over here quick,” shouted a couple of small boys suddenly, “there’s a cat over here chasing mice. It must belong to them as well.”
“That proves it,” said Dick, “witches they are for sure. Somebody start getting some wood together, we all know what to do when we catch them, and don’t forget that goes for the cat as well!”
“Quick, get up a bit higher and look out for Moggy,” said Morwenna, “I’ll make us visible when I see him and lean over the side to pick him up, we can’t leave him behind to be burnt by these horrible people.”
A moment later she pointed to Moggy who was being chased round the back of some barns by a group of children. He’d done very well so far, but was beginning to tire as more and more of them took up the chase.
The scooter suddenly became visible and zoomed low over the children’s heads. Morwenna was screaming at the top of her voice, trying both to frighten them and let Moggy know that they were on their way to rescue him. Jennifer Jane dropped a huge chocolate Swiss roll just in front of the group and watched happily as the first two or three tripped over it and fell flat on their faces.
“That should slow them down a bit; I’ve always found it very effective before.”
She stopped just above the cat while Morwenna leaned over and picked him up. The scooter wobbled wildly for a moment while Jennifer Jane fought to regain balance, then it zoomed off gaining height and disappeared from the villager’s sight once again.
“I don’t know what they were getting all upset about,” said Moggy, “I was only catching a few mice for them. You’d have thought they’d be grateful!”
“Well I don’t know about you, but I think we’ll try and find some one a bit more educated to ask next time. How about finding a squire’s house about a hundred miles or so away from here? That might be far enough to change the local attitude towards witches!”
