Jennifer Jane had to wait two days before she was able to get to the Witches’ Home to discuss her performance at any length with Abigail.
“She’s away on a journey woman trip,” said one of the witches when Abigail couldn’t be found. “She set off towards Lurbridge, but I expect one of the seniors will tell you exactly where she went if you really need to know.”
Jennifer Jane was a bit disappointed, but it wasn’t really important enough to disturb a senior, so she decided to head off towards Lurbridge and see if she could find Abigail for herself.
She landed next to the George and Dragons and went inside to ask if anyone had seen Abigail recently.
“She was in here just half an hour ago, looking for Sir George,” replied the landlord, “but we’ve no idea where he is, so she went off to ask his horse, over at the blacksmith’s.”
Jennifer Jane hurried off to talk to the horse for herself. She wasn’t all that far behind Abigail and the sooner she found out where she’d gone, the sooner she’d be able to catch her up. If she didn’t want to be interrupted in whatever she was doing, then at least she’d have the fun of tracking her down.
“Oh crumbs another one looking for Sir! I don’t know where he went, but I do know he’s due back tomorrow. When he left he went off that way,” the horse nodded his head to point down river.”
Jennifer Jane thanked him and flew off in the direction indicated. She stopped for a moment at the wood yard to ask Phil if he’d seen which way George went on his trips.
He shook his head. “Sorry miss, he heads off downstream, that’s all I know. Why, I told Abigail the same only half an hour ago. Is he in some sort of trouble?”
Jennifer Jane flew on. She had already passed the transport fog and arrived at the widest part of the river where it really became the sea. She still hadn’t spotted Abigail, so she went up as high as she could and still be able to see people on the ground.
Once or twice she dived down to have a closer look at small groups, but they always turned out to be strangers.
She was just about to give up, when she noticed a lady and a man walking slowly along the sea wall, heading back towards Lurbridge. She started diving down to ask if they’d seen anything of George and his group, when she had the strangest feeling that the lady looked rather familiar.
She flew round in a large circle and carefully came up behind them. She couldn’t really believe her eyes, but without actually looking at the lady’s face, there was a remarkable resemblance to her next door neighbour Eve.
At least she’d found George; there was no doubt about that! Just in case there was a problem she made herself and her scooter invisible and then flew up alongside for a good look. She’d been quite right; George and Eve were deep in conversation.
