“We’ll stop at a village called Lurbridge for the night. There’s a good inn there called the George and Dragons. It’s named after me actually;” George said modestly, “the name was changed when Jennifer Jane got the dragons to eat coal. The sign now shows the scene on the village green; when the dragons landed to talk about the amount of coal they’d need to stop them from eating the peasants.”
“I’m really looking forward to having a chat with a real live dragon,” said Eve, “are you really sure it’s safe?”
“Oh yes, I talk to them all the time. I’ll take you to meet Tasmin, she’s the nearest, but if you ask Jennifer Jane nicely, she might take you to see Clarence. He lives somewhere in your world, although you’d never find him on your own. I think there are only four in the whole of Britain and one of those is a baby.”
Jennifer Jane was horrified. Somehow or other Eve had found her way to the alternate world and seemed to be being given a guided tour. She flew back to the Witches’ Home as quickly as possible and asked the witch on guard duty if she could see one of the seniors urgently.
The witch listened patiently to her story. “I think we can afford to wait until Abigail gets back,” she said, “we already suspect that George is up to something unusual. Abigail went off to try and find him and ask what he was doing and I think you’ve just found the answer. The first thing to do is make sure that your neighbour doesn’t believe anything she may have seen here. We’ve already got an idea as to how we can deal with that, then when that’s settled; we’ll have time to deal separately with George. Can you get back to where you left them and try and stop Abigail from talking to them. Tell her we’re dealing with it already and bring her straight back here.”
