“Do you happen to have a pack of cards here?” asked Jennifer Jane changing the subject.
The landlord reached under the bar and brought the most horrible looking dirty damp pack she’d ever seen. “Are these any good for you? He asked. “We don’t get much call for cards here,” he said, noticing her horrified expression. We’re more a dominoes and shove ha’penny lot in this village.”
Jennifer Jane grinned, “just as well I brought my own then. I just thought you’d be sure that I wasn’t cheating if I used yours, but they really are too horrible to handle. Now then,” she went into her routine and a few moments later triumphantly produced the card that the landlord had chosen.
He looked at her with a puzzled look on his face. “So what!” he said. “You’re a witch and that seems like pretty elementary magic to me. I don’t see the point.”
“But that is the point, it’s not magic at all, it’s a trick! I’m manipulating the cards to produce the result.”
“Daft idea if you ask me and whatever else you may do, don’t tell anyone else you cheat at cards, or you might get thrown out of here, witch or no witch!”
Dave laughed. “It looks like that’s the end of your conjuring career in this world. If I were you I’d just carry on amazing your friends at home.”
“Do you know, you’ve just given me an idea, I think I might do just that. I’ll have a word with Abigail on the way back and see if she’ll agree to let me do a conjuring show at school. If people here think tricks are all done by magic, then if she’ll let me use magic at home, everyone will think it’s wonderful conjuring!”
She finished her drink as quickly as she could and then flew back to the Witches’ Home leaving her father to follow.
Dave looked at the landlord and winked, “I don’t know what she’s up to yet, but this time I think she might be causing problems in our world for a change.”
