The Weald and Downland museum

I recently went out for the day
On a coach trip with the U3A
To the Weald and Downland open air museum
Who have lots of buildings and I wanted to see ‘em
Sixty children in period costume
Dressed so by their teachers in case they lost ‘em
All involved in making candles
Walking around with strings on handles
Taking turns at a wax pot tall and thin
To dip their dangling string wicks in.
Then the gridshell, words can’t express
The general feeling of airiness
A bubble constructed with oaken laths
Woven in space on parallel paths
The diamond pattern forms in a sense
A three dimensional wattle fence
The Tudor kitchen is a lark
A cook is working in the dark
Lit only by the glow of candles
She can hardly see the pots she handles
Feeding the ducks beside the pond
Buying gifts to take home to our friends
Then as it was summer it started to rain
So we climbed into our coach and went home again.
