The Hidden Door
The steps would creak every time you would go down the stairs. The wooden railings have become rigid and rough. The light bulbs have not been changed for months, dust and spider webs have collected on the corners of the walls and night creatures have inhabited my basement. It's one place where I have neglected to go ever since I've moved here.
On those rare occasions when my mother tells me to store the boxes, I go down to the basement, but very quickly. I just drop the box to the first empty space I find and run out of the room as though something is chasing me.
One night, I was babysitting my next-door neighbor's four-year-old girl, Laura. I adored the little girl. She has long curly brown hair and big hazel eyes. I love taking care of her. That night, we started to play one of her favorite games hide ' and ' go ' seek.
"Ok, one- two - three ¦ ready are not here I come. I yelled
First, I went upstairs into the bedrooms, and looked into cramped closets and under the unmade beds. Then, I rechecked the rooms again, searched in every possible space she could hide, but I could not find her.
I panicked, I was screaming her name and running back and forth with tears coming down my face. I was frightened; what could have happened to her? I turned around and I saw a light coming from the basement. I took one deep breath and headed towards the basement. "Laura you can come out now, I give up,
There was no answer, all I could hear was the rattling notice of the furnace. I flipped on the switch that turned on the lights of the basement. The lights flickered for a couple of seconds until it stopped.
I started to search around the basement only to find boxes and a pile of old clothes. When I was about to give up and go back upstairs, I saw a door that was ajar. The door led to the location of an ancient looking furnace. Rust was already starting to develop on the outer rings of the pipes. I looked behind the furnace just to make sure Laura was not hiding or stuck there. When I looked, I noticed something unusual, it looked like an outline of a door. The dim lights did not help the situation, so I decided to check it out. I squeezed through the narrow passage. I had to tuck in my stomach so I could fit. After I got through, I saw a small wooden door with a golden handle.
I did not know what to do. I was caught in between my conscience telling me to turn the knob or just ignore and get someone down here. Finally I reached my decision and opened the door. As I opened it, I found a small room that was already lit up. There was a bed to the left of me with pink thick covers and a white bed net. To the right was a small dollhouse and a little girl staring directly at me. I was startled to see that the little girl looked exactly like Laura, but she was in a white gown and hair tied up in a tight bun.
She held out her right hand and as soon as my sweaty fingers touched her palm I woke up lying on the cold concrete of my basement floor. Laura was staring right down at me. "Why did it take you so long to find me? Laura said curiously.
"Well¦I¦ couldn't find you, I said.
After Lauren's mother came to pick her up, I immediately rush backed down the basement. When I looked behind the furnace their was absolutely nothing. I was astonished, I swore that I opened a hidden door. Was I going mad? I did not tell anybody about what happened because I was afraid they would think I was crazy. I did some research and found out that their use to be a farm where my house was located. Long ago there was a devastating fire that killed everything in sight, even the little girl who used to live here.
